The Tannery is one of the most significant heritage redevelopment projects in Kitchener. Originally constructed between 1896 and 1917 as the Lang Tannery Company, the facility was once the largest leather tanning operation in the British Empire and a defining industrial landmark in the city’s early history.
Serving as General Contractor, we worked alongside Cadan Inc. and RAW Design to transform the historic complex into modern mixed-use office and retail space. The redevelopment involved extensive upgrades to the building’s structural, mechanical, and electrical systems, while carefully preserving its distinctive brick-and-beam construction and heritage character.
Throughout the project, historic elements were restored through brick restoration and sandblasting, while new infrastructure such as a modern elevator core, updated washrooms, and contemporary common areas were integrated to support today’s commercial tenants. Today, The Tannery is home to a number of prominent technology companies and stands as a cornerstone of Kitchener’s innovation district.
